 MOUSE! .... crash!..... ooooops!

A DOG'S DIARY: Confessions and explanations of a Jack Russell!

Those who know me understand that my biggest passion in life is hunting... especially mice! After all that is what Jack Russell's are born to do! So when I discovered that a mouse had taken up residence and was using the heater as a doorway to come into our house, I decided I needed to do something drastic to get rid of this uninvited rodent!

It was obvious that "she" was busy elsewhere and probably didn't have time, so I quietly found a way to get inside and made my plans to deal with it!

There was a stereo speaker near his hiding hole. It was in the way, so I moved it. Unfortunately I must admit I probably did damage it a little, as it was so hard to move and I had to claw it quite a bit to get behind it. Girls, don't worry! My nails are quite strong so I didn't hurt myself. However I discovered I couldn't get it to move far enough. It was stopped by a black wire thing so I quickly chewed that off and pushed the speaker out of the way. Well.... it kind of fell over! But it was out of the way and I could now see the mouse's entry/exit point!!

Then I thought, 'what if the mouse comes out the other side of the heater?' So, of course I had to move the other speaker as well, only this time I had some previous experience so it was much easier to shift it and chew off the back wire off that led back to the stereo. (It didn't taste much good!)

I sat and waited for many hours but the little blighter didn't dare show that mousey face again. I knew it was still there, but it just didn't come out! At every opportunity, when I could get inside, I sat and waited and watched intently, always staying on guard .... just in case!

Then I realised that I should have tried to move the whole heater. However that was going to be much more difficult as it was extreemly heavy and I couldn't get at it from the brickwork around it.

Having learned a few lessons from moving the speakers, I realised that the thick (electrical) cord would be what was stopping me from moving it .... but I patiently chewed it off!

Alas the heater STILL didn't move! Even after all that effort chewing that thick plastic-y cord! Such a wasted effort! Such an awful taste!

THEN I realised that the little buggar had somehow got out! I did my usual detective-type check of the entire room and found the rotten little mouse had left a half eaten decorative corncob behind .... and it was underneath the china cabinet! Getting closer now.....

So, while my owner was busy working in her office, I made my plans! I patiently set up my vigil by the china cabinet thinking, "AHA!! Got him trapped now!"

After a few days he still hadn't shown his cheeky face, but I wasn't going to give up! Then I thought I saw him go behind and into the china cabinet through a hole. WELL! THAT GOT ME RILED!!! HOW DARE HE!!!

I stood up and looked inside the door to see where he went and the door just popped open (WOW!) so I got right in there and started searching for him! I just KNEW he was cornered! There was a lot of glass in the way which I had to shift, but I knew he was in there somewhere!

Next minute "she" was standing over me and joining in the HUNT! This is really GREAT to have her help! However she surprised me by getting side-tracked about all the glass stuff on the floor ..... she was more interested in that than in finding that DARNED MOUSE!

I guess I will never understand why "she" is so uninterested in getting the mouse. Now she has closed the door and locks me out so I can no longer stand guard. How can I be expected to do my job? I fear that mouse will be laughing at us both. Winter is approaching and I expect he, and probably his whole family, are getting ready to move in and get really comfy somewhere else inside MY house!

BUT, NOT WHILE I'M LIVING HERE
